African Beads 3

A very pretty strand of excavated teal and pearly white medium glass nila beads.

Age: Circa 1200-1600 A.D.

Size: 25+ inches of beads on this strand. Bead range from approximately 4-8mm. "Medium" size range reference is a relative term comparing these to smaller glass nila bead strands from our shops.

Why we love this strand:
A favorite strand due to the variation in teal beads, the pearlized  appearance of many of the white and off white beads and the lovely wear on all of the beads on this strand.
Lots to work with!

These beads can be sourced from Mauritania and Mali, but they were originally crafted in Kiffa, Mauritania. Production was limited to a short period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, making them extremely scarce. It is believed that these beads come in five main shapes: Triangular teardrop, tubular, round, conical, and diamond shape. They feature intricate patterns and a combination of colors, such as red, blue, yellow, brown, and white. Many people were involved in their production, resulting in a variety of shapes, patterns, and colors. Around the year 2000, new Kiffa beads began to be crafted in Kiffa using the old traditional techniques.
